#386; NYX Matte Lipstick // Soft Matte Lip Cream

Back with another lipstick swatches x review x look.
I think I am doing pretty well in catching up to all the backlog of blog posts, don't you think?
Today's post is on the NYX Matte Lipstick in Tea Rose and the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream (SMLC) in Cannes. I wanted to do them solo, but I thought it made for drab content thus I group them together to form my NYX lip collection so far!

I first heard of NYX when I started to delve into the world of makeup, look how far that was and how far I've come?! They offered a source of affordable but pretty good drugstore makeup products for a girl my age (I was 15 then). My first lipstick was a NYX one but I hated it because it made my lips look flaky and I never had any luck with any of their lip products. So I was pretty skeptical and frankly distrustful of getting any NYX lip product since then.

Don't get me wrong, I love everything else about them but the lip products just never did work out for me. So here I am with the sole survivors of my NYX lip collection and see if they will stay, or go to the bin like the rest of my NYX lipstick.

The two NYX products of today's review. The Matte Lipstick in MLS 11 - Tea Rose and the ever famous Soft Matte Lip Cream in SMLC 19 - Cannes.
Both are retailing at Sephora for SGD$12 and for such a price, they are considered really affordable. Especially since it is actually found in Sephora!

I gotten the NYX Matte Lipstick in Tea Rose from a swap in Carousell and was my first ever matte lipstick and in this shade. I like that it is packaged in a sleek black plastic tube with a transparent tube to show how much product I have left and also the shade it is in. I totally get it if you have a bunch of these and you need to desperately find that shade of pinks or reds, since there are 33 shades in this matte lipstick collection.

What I didn't fancy about it was how flimsy it felt. I understand that because it is lightweight, you can tote it around in a clutch without carrying too much and thus this may be a pro/con to some. I just didn't feel like the lipstick tube could handle any accidental "drops" unlike MAC or even NARS packaging. The lipstick bullet also looks a little on the short side but I wonder if the transparent window gave that disillusionment.

The SMLC in Cannes took me awhile to find in stores because most stores ran out of it and I had to troop three Sephora before finding the shade I wanted. So if you see the shades you like and there is stock in the Sephora you are in, get it without hesitation! There are 22 shades from the collection to choose from and each shade is gorgeous.

The Soft Matte Lip Cream is packaged in a lipgloss like tube with a matte top, which is prone to dusty fingerprints (pictured above). Application is done via a doe foot applicator like a lipgloss. Almost everything about it screamed lipgloss and I was first hesitant about getting this because I was afraid of getting dried flaky lips and because I hated lipglosses for the heavy finish. I was afraid that this would only serve to dry my lips out further. But I took a leap of faith.

Swatches of both Tea Rose and Cannes under harsh lighting.
Both looks a tad glossy due to the lighting and initial application but they dry down to a matte finish seen below.

Tea Rose and Cannes in normal room lighting and this is how the lipstick would look like on your lips and I find, the most accurate color to represent them.

After swatching them on my wrists, I realized that they are eerily similar to what I have just swatched a while back. Yes! The Colourpop Lippie Stix which I reviewed here
Getting excited, I took out my stash and immediately did a swatch next to its similar counterparts.

I thought Colourpop Lumiere was quite similar to NYX matte lipstick in Tea Rose when they were in the packaging. Lumiere is more dusty mauve and has a deeper brown-pink undertone to it than Tea Rose. Tea Rose is a little blue toned in my opinion and cooler, although it is also a lovely shade of rose. It leans slightly more pink than Lumiere.

Colourpop Brink is super darn similar to NYX soft matte lipcream in Cannes. Both colors are a coral-pink with brown undertones that makes it so so wearable from day to night. They may look slightly different in the swatches above but that is because I swatched on Cannes in a thin layer and when build up, the opacity and shade matches that of Brink. Cannes leans a little more pink but otherwise, they are almost identically similar and I thought maybe I was the one being biased.

So I let my sister see both swatches in real life, and she couldn't tell the difference between Cannes and Brink. She thought I swatched them twice until I pointed out the slightest of differences between the two. *insert cry-smiley*

This is a selfie without any lipstick on. My lips are more pigmented at the upper lips.
So nude lipsticks tend to not cover my upper lips, which can be quite a sight for sore eyes..

Here is how NYX matte lipstick in Tea Rose looks like on me. The color is pigmented and truly covers my pigmented lips. I love how smooth this glides on but since it is a matte lipstick, your lip lines will be accentuated.

However, in photos, they look pretty fine.
The lip bullet is one of the fundamentals of lipstick, so no problems with application. The longevity is less thrilling. When I first wore this on, it was my first relatively "mature" shade. I would choose hot pinks and reds, so I tried hard to love this shade.

I put this on and it did not dry out my lips but when I drank, ate or even accidentally touch my lips, the NYX matte lipstick in tea rose would just leave a mark everywhere. Crap. So this transfers like crazyyy. I don't know if it is just me, but I really dislike the fact that I see traces of my lip presence everywhere, so I left it in my makeup basket and promptly forgotten about it.

I however, recently tried hard to fall in love with this shade again. But because this shade is slightly more blue tone than Colourpop Lumiere (they look really similar on the lips), it didn't really match my complexion? I don't know but I feel like it actually makes me look tanner/brown. BUT I want to look fair..

The NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes is one of the prettiest shades ever.
The application is extremely smooth and because of the doe foot applicator, I find it easy to reach to the corner of my mouth without making a whole lot of mess. I'd reach for this everytime I am rushing for time.

It glides on smoothly and doesn't tug at all. I like how nice it smells, almost like a vanilla with butter and the texture. Holy crap. Goes on like butter on your lips but when it dries to a matte finish, it doesn't dry out your lips but keep it moisturize and the best part, doesn't even feel like you are wearing lipstick.

Because of the formula, you can choose to apply a thick layer to build up opacity or even to apply it thinly to get the same shade as that of Colourpop Brink. In the photos and lip swatches, I applied two coats of Cannes.

I have to say that I love love love this color the best!
It would have to be one of the best decision ever, to try out the NYX smlc. And I am just super tempted to get more shades to swatch on! The color on my lips is a beautiful shade of coral pink and the color changes depending on how many coats you put on. It could be a light coral pink or as above, a darker almost rose coral shade. I love this.

And the best part, layer this up because no matter what, this still feels weightless!
Longevity is superb. I don't see this lurking around spoons and hardly transfer after it dries down to a matte finish. I find that I only need one reapplication after a heavy meal of the day.

My final verdict: NYX matte lipstick are a no-go for me but the Soft matte lip cream is here to stay. I will definitely get more shades to add to my collection and I am not being biased here when I say they don't dry my lips at all and feel weightless. My sister gotten the shade Ibiza and she loves it as much as I do! xx
